Trump's Last Hope Boris Johnson, UK Stuck!

Last Thursday, US presidential candidate Joe Biden issued a warning to the UK that they should respect the agreement with Northern Ireland after leaving the European Union (EU), or no trade agreement between the US-UK will be made.

Biden in a tweet on his twitter page said, "We cannot allow the Good Friday Agreement that brings peace to Northern Ireland to be a victim of Brexit".

Biden echoed a reminder by Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last week that any British action to build a border between Northern Ireland and the European Union would lead to the cancellation of bilateral relations between the US-UK.

However, analysts argue that trade law is subject to Congress, and at the same time Trump sometimes sets aside the agreement if it is not in line with his goals. In order to reach a comprehensive agreement, Congres's approval is required.

The warning came as the Trump administration's U.S. negotiators were in the process of concluding a fourth trade deal with the UK. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo concluded on Wednesday that a solution could be reached.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer's comments on the Trump administration's views on the issue add to the concerns. According to him, Congress is unlikely to approve a trade agreement if the UK puts a border on Ireland and violates the Good Friday agreement.
