Former US President Donald Trump fundraiser Elliot Broidy is expected to plead guilty next week to illegally lobbying the Trump administration to drop an investigation into the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) company scandal.
The matter was revealed through court documents filed yesterday.
Broidy is expected to appear in federal court in Washington next Tuesday to hear a decision on his appeal.
Broidy allegedly agreed to accept millions of dollars to lobby Trump and the Department of Justice to end the investigation into ‘a wealthy businessman living in East Asia’ following the role of businessmen in the 1MDB scandal.
The charge, however, did not mention the true identity of the businessman.
Court documents filed earlier this month show Broidy was also accused of lobbying the Trump administration to arrange the repatriation of a Chinese tycoon, Guo Wengui, who lives in the US to China.
Broidy has been a major fundraiser for the Republican party for several years and previously held the post of senior finance official for President Trump's 2016 campaign.
He is the latest individual to be linked to Trump, convicted of criminal charges ahead of the November 3 presidential election.
Earlier, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was found guilty of violating the U.S. Foreign Registration Act for lobbying pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine.
