UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is believed to be awaiting the outcome of the US presidential election before finally deciding whether to choose a 'no-deal' in his trade agreement with the European Union (EU).
Ivan Rogers, who was the UK permanent representative in Brussels from 2013 to 2017, told the Observer, a British newspaper published on Sunday, that some officials and ministers believed Johnson would wait for the US election results.
PM Johnson is said to be more likely to vote 'no deal' if his best friend and even Brexit supporter Donald Trump wins next week's election.
The prime minister may be able to conclude a post-Brexit trade agreement with the United States sooner than Joe Biden, who won the presidential election.
On the other hand, the Biden administration is likely to prioritize rebuilding relations with the EU that have been damaged by Trump and it may prefer the US-EU trade agreement over the UK.
Rogers and other former UK diplomats had previously warned that the Democratic administration under Biden would prove very problematic for Johnson and the UK government, threatening special relations between the two countries.
