A group of researchers warn that the coronavirus vaccine will not guarantee a return to normal human life for at least another six months.
The Covid-19 vaccine is currently seen as a solution to end the pandemic.
However, the research group involved stated that we need to be realistic about what the vaccine can achieve and when.
"Even though the vaccine is already available, it does not mean that within a month everyone will receive the vaccine, we are talking about a period of six months, nine months or a year," said the Head of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London, Prof. Nilay Shah |
They added that the ban order could be relaxed gradually as vaccine production could take a year before being released.
More than 200 vaccines are being developed by scientists around the world at an immediate rate.
"Vaccines provide great hopes for pandemics being terminated but we know the history of vaccine development often goes through many failures," said Dr. Fiona Culley of the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London.
Some scientific advisers to the United Kingdom (UK) government are optimistic that the vaccine will be given to a handful of individuals this year and the massive distribution of vaccines may begin early next year.
But preliminary test data show the vaccine responds to the immune system but is not yet sufficient to prove whether it can provide full protection or reduce Covid-19 symptoms.
In fact, researchers also warn that long-term immunity-related issues will take some time to answer. Also, they do not know if everyone needs to receive the vaccine every few years or just one injection is enough.
