The United States (US) Court has rejected a Justice Department (DoJ) attempt to defend President Donald Trump over the case of a woman who claimed Trump nearly raped her.
The woman, who is also a columnist, E Jean Carroll claimed that Trump 'attacked her' at a convenience store in Manhattan in the 1990s.
In a lawsuit filed by Carroll, he alleges Trump slandered him while denying the allegations and calling the woman a ‘liar’.
The DoJ tried to represent Trump as a defendant after asserting Trump was a ‘Federal employee’ and carried out his responsibilities as President when he rejected Carroll’s allegations.
However Judge Lewis Kaplan of the Federal District Court in Manhattan insisted Trump was not a Federal employee.
Several legal experts had previously said that the DoJ's move to bring the case to the Federal court would result in the claim 'ending just like that' because the Federal government could not be sued on defamation charges.
But the decision made by Kaplan has given a new light to Carroll because the case can run as usual.
Kaplan said the sexual assault took place before Trump became President and the allegations have nothing to do with US official affairs.
This news will definitely hit Trump who is currently campaigning to retain his post on November 3.
