Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told Monday he had spoken with President-elect Joe Biden on his dispute with China.
Trudeau has asked Biden to convince Beijing to release two Canadians who have been jailed in response to the arrest of a top Huawei executive.
The Prime Minister's Office says Trudeau is the first international leader to speak to Biden since the US news media announced he had won the presidential election on Saturday.
In addition, the two leaders were also reported to have discussed several issues including the coronavirus pandemic and climate change.
In December 2018, Beijing arrested former diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor just days after Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou, a Huawei executive and also the daughter of the company's founder.
The United States is currently trying to extradite Meng on charges of fraud and extradition cases in a Canadian court.
The arrests have damaged relations between China and Canada. Following the dispute, Beijing has also sentenced two other Canadians to death and suspended canola imports.
