The United States (US) is expected to receive the first Covid-19 vaccine likely as early as December 11.

The news was revealed by the head of the US coronavirus vaccine program, Dr. Moncef Slaoui to CNN.

According to Slaoui, his party plans to send the vaccine to the quarantine center within 24 hours after the vaccine is approved.

According to data collected by Johns Hopkins University, the US recorded over 12 million cases of infection and 255,000 deaths.

Last Friday, pharmaceutical companies, Pfizer and BioNTech submitted applications for emergency use approval in the US for the vaccines they produced.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) vaccine advisory committee is scheduled to meet on December 10 to discuss whether the vaccine will be approved or not.

Slaoui added that the vaccine will be distributed based on the population of each state in the US and each state administration will decide who will get the vaccine first, especially those most at risk such as health workers and the elderly.

The vaccine produced by Pfizer shows 95% effectiveness. Pfizer also hopes to produce about 50 million doses of vaccine by the end of this year.

In addition, vaccines developed by Moderna were also reported to show almost 95% effectiveness, according to test data. The company is also expected to apply for approval for its vaccine within a few weeks.
