The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is conducting an investigation into a mysterious call or 'robocall' directing people across the United States (US) to sit at home on election day.

Robocall is a call that automatically sends a message to the public using the voice of a robot.

Millions of voters reportedly received the call.

Authorities are still tracking where the call came from and some of the calls did not specifically mention voting.

"There is little confusion about this across the industry," RoboKiller vice president Giulia Porter told Reuters. Robokiller is a company that fights robocall calls.

According to Porter, one of the calls only stated that it was a trial call and told people to sit at home.

Porter explained that the robocall was done for almost a year but became one of the biggest fake calls in the US yesterday.

Authorities are concerned about the call, especially in the state of Michigan.

"Certainly all this is fake and an attempt to restrict voting. Don't be fooled by the call, "Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said via Twitter.

In addition, New York Attorney General Letitia James described the call used to prevent the public from going out to vote.
