US Presidential candidate Joe Biden nominated former Federal Reserve chairman Janet Yellen as a candidate for Secretary of the Treasury.
If her candidacy is approved by the Senate, Yellen will be the first woman to hold the post.
Yellen's nomination was made after the states of Arizona and Wisconsin officially confirmed Biden as the winner of the election in both locations.
However, US President Donald Trump is expected to file legal action against the vote count in the two states.
Yellen was previously touted by most media as a candidate to fill the portfolio.
"We are facing a big challenge as a country at this time. To recover, we must bring back the American people - a society in which everyone can achieve their potential and greater dreams for their children.
"As Secretary of the Treasury, I will work every day towards rebuilding that dream for everyone," Yellen said via Twitter following Biden's announcement yesterday.
The 74-year-old has served as head of the American central bank and senior economic adviser to former President Bill Clinton.
As chairman of the Federal Reserve, Yellen is better known for his role in focusing more attention on the impact of bank policy on workers of rising costs of American inequality.
But Trump decided not to appoint Yellen for a second term in the Federal Reserve.
Since leaving the post in 2018, Yellen has been vocal in his views on climate change and the need for Washington to do everything it can to protect the U.S. economy from the impact of Covid-19.
