European countries have begun implementing travel restrictions on United Kingdom (UK) tourists after a new variant of Covid-19 spread in London and Southeast England.
Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium are among the countries implementing the sanctions.
Hours after Britain announced the discovery of the variant, the Netherlands issued a statement that it would implement air travel restrictions from the UK starting January 1. In addition, the Netherlands also imposes restrictions on ferry travel arriving from the UK.
France also blocked all travel routes, including freight trucks from the UK for a period of 48 hours from Saturday to yesterday.
A meeting involving the European Union (EU) will be discussed today to discuss more structured sanctions.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday introduced a new level four blockade at the affected locations and he had to revoke instructions to loosen travel restrictions in conjunction with Christmas Day.
Health experts say there is no evidence that the new variant is more dangerous or reacts differently to vaccines but is 70% more contagious.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock described the discovery of the new variant as a bad thing for the country.
