U.S. authorities warn of a massive hacking attack unveiled this week, posing significant risks to the government, critical infrastructure and the private sector.

According to Reuters, the US Treasury and the trade department are among the hackers.

Earlier, the Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration also had evidence that hackers had accessed their network.

According to the US Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency (Cisa), attempts to thwart attacks are extremely complicated.

Many suspect the Russian government was responsible for the attack. However, the Kremlin denied the allegations and described the allegations as baseless.

In a statement issued yesterday, Cisa said attacks on government agencies, critical infrastructure entities and private sector organizations began in March this year.

Adding to the statement, the perpetrators behind the hacking 'showed patience, operational security and a complicated trading pattern in the attack'.

Cisa has yet to identify the mastermind behind the attack as well as the agencies and organizations involved in the hacking or what information has been stolen and exposed.

Meanwhile, US Presidential candidate Joe Biden said he would place cyber security as an important priority during his administration.

Biden said he wanted to prevent the country's 'enemies' from carrying out cyber attacks and would work with close allies to deal with the situation in the future.
