The United States House of Representatives (US) yesterday supported a US $ 740 billion defense policy bill.
A total of 335 supported while another 78 disagreed with the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). MPs from Democrats and Republicans strongly support the bill.
"Today, the House of Representatives sent a clear message to the American people. Our members of the national service and security are more important than politics, ”said Democrat Representative Adam Smith in a statement issued.
The Senate will hold a vote on the bill this week. Proponents of the bill hope that US President Donald Trump will consider his veto threat if the bill gets the same margin of votes.
The NDAA sets the policy for the Pentagon to make its own decisions especially in terms of purchasing weapons, warships or determining the best way to deal with geopolitical threats.
Trump had earlier promised to issue a veto order against the bill because the NDAA did not repeal Section 230 of the Decent Communications Act, which protects technology companies such as Google, Twitter and Facebook from taking responsibility for anything contained in their platform.
The Trump threat received criticism from MPs who said the technology move had nothing to do with defense and was not included in the NDAA.
They also stressed Trump's concerns about the social media company should not block a bill deemed important to the Pentagon.
"Our military cannot be punished because this bill does not improve everything that needs to be improved," said Republican Representative Mac Thornberry.
