Indonesia released the mastermind behind the 2002 Bali bombing incident and one of the country's most wanted terrorists, Abu Bakar Baasyir today.

According to Detik.com, the leader of the Indonesian Mujahideen Council (MMI) was seen being picked up by his family and taken home to his home in Central Java.

Television station footage showed several vans leaving the prison area in Bogor, south of Jakarta.

Ba'asyir, 82, was jailed in 2011 for 15 years after the alleged links with militant military camp in Aceh province.

After receiving a periodic reduction of prison sentences, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights informed Baasyir had completed his sentence.

Although linked to the Balinese attack that killed 202 people and the attack on the J.W. hotel. Marriot Jakarta in 2003, Baasyir never pleaded guilty to all the charges against him.

Zulkarnaen, a man believed to be one of the top members of the Jemaah Islamiah (JI) and involved in making bombs when the two attacks took place, was arrested last month.

According to Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne, Indonesia needs to ensure that Baasyir no longer commits any crime of terrorism.

Meanwhile, one of the survivors of the Bali bombing incident, Thiolina Marpaung wants the authorities to continue monitoring Baasyir's movements.

"We do not know what he did in prison. The government needs to monitor the perpetrators of violence in Indonesia who are released from prison, "said Marpaung.

Following the Bali attacks and support from Australia and the United States (US), Indonesia formed an elite anti-terrorism force to combat the JI group and successfully detained and shot dead a group of suspected militants.

But there are newly formed terrorist groups and launch attacks in Indonesia. Last month, a total of 23 terrorists were arrested, including Zulkarnaen.
