Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) announced the appointment of Nor Zahidi Alias and the reappointment of Datuk Dr Gan Wee Beng as an external member of the BNM Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) for a period of two years, effective January 1 and April 1 respectively.
In a statement issued today by BNM, under the Bank Negara Malaysia Act 2009, the MPC is responsible for formulating monetary policy and policies to conduct monetary policy operations.
"Their appointment will continue to enhance their expertise and shared experience related to the responsibilities and functions of the MPC," said the statement as reported by Bernama.
Nor Zahidi is a former chief economist at Malaysian Rating Corporation Bhd (MARC) and holds a Masters in Economic Policy and a Bachelor in Economics from Boston University.
Prior to serving at MARC, he was Chief Researcher and Chief Economist at Alliance Merchant Bank and Chief Researcher at MCIS Zurich Insurance.
Meanwhile, Wee Beng, who has been a member of the MPC since April 1, 2019, is currently a board member of the Malaysian Deposit Insurance Corporation and previously a board member in the Retirement Fund.
He was also previously a Senior Advisor in the Economic Department of the Financial Authority of Singapore and a consultant to the World Bank and the International Labor Organization.
According to BNM, with the two latest appointments, the MPC will be made up of eight members including the Governor, Nor Shamsiah Yunus; Deputy Governor, Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour; Deputy Governor Jessica Chew Cheng Lian; Deputy Governor, Marzunisham Omar; Assistant Governor, Norzila Abdul Aziz and Assistant Governor, Dr Norhana Endut.
