Former Real Madrid player David Barral made football history when he became the first player to finance his transfer to a new club using Bitcoin.
The 37-year-old striker joined the DUX Internacional de Madrid club playing in the Spanish Segunda B League.
The agreement to take him to the team, also known as Inter Madrid, was fully funded using the cryptocurrency.
"He became the first player in history to be bought with cryptocurrencies. Thanks to our new sponsor, Criptan for making it impossible, ”the club said in a statement via Twitter.
The transfer fee paid by the club, which is also owned by Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibault Courtois, was not disclosed.
While with Real Madrid, Barral failed to place himself with the senior squad and only played 50 times for Real Madrid's B team.
He then competed for Sporting Gijon, Levante and Racing Santander before finalizing the historic move.
