U.S. President Joe Biden reportedly canceled the Keystone XL pipeline construction project on his first day at the White House.
In a speech note seen by the Canadian and US media, Biden is said to have signed an executive order to revoke the approval of the $ 8 billion project due to concerns about fossil fuels contributing to climate change.
The administration of the Liberal party of Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau had previously urged Biden not to stop the project, which involved the transfer of oil from Alberta province to Nebraska.
The cancellation of this project could threaten Canada's employment and bilateral relations with the United States as well as pose a major blow to the country's energy sector.
Following the report, Alberta Prime Minister Jason Kenney expressed his concern over Biden's plans and said that if the project was canceled, his administration would take legal action.
The Keystone XL pipe will carry about 830,000 barrels of crude oil a day from Alberta to Nebraska. From there, oil will travel through existing pipelines to factories around the Gulf of Mexico.
