Speculation about Jack Ma's disappearance escalated when Alibaba founder failed to appear in the last episode of Africa's Business Heroes reality show, where he was one of the panel's judges. His absence is seen as something strange because a few weeks before the final episode of the program he had time to upload some statements on his twitter.
The last episode, which was recorded last November, even featured another Alibaba executive in place of Jack Ma. Alibaba has issued a statement that the panel change was due to the overlapping Jack Ma schedule.
Adding to the speculation on the matter is the disappearance of Jack Ma after one of his business entities, Ant Group is under Chinese government monitoring following Jack Ma's controversial statement in Shanghai on October 24. In a speech in Shanghai, he criticized China's financial system by saying that it was 'ancient'. Jack Ma even suggested that the Chinese government should create a more innovative system for future generations.
A few days after the controversial statement, Ant Group's IPO, which had initially been approved, was suspended on the grounds of several issues including Jack Ma's call for financial reform.
