The President of the United States (US), Joe Biden, will take a ‘patient and strategic’ approach with China while holding internal and joint talks with allies on the growing challenges.
"We have seen over the past few years that China is becoming more assertive at home and more assertive abroad besides Beijing is now a significant challenge to our security, prosperity and values and requires a new American approach.
"We want to use this approach with some aspects of 'strategic patience'," White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters as reported by Bernama.
The Biden administration is currently conducting an inter-departmental review of China's comprehensive policy, including trade and commerce, as well as consulting with Congress and foreign allies on the best way to maintain ties.
Psaki added that Biden would wait for the review to be completed before deciding on the best way to take any action, but stressed that his approach was 'multilateral'.
"Biden is committed to preventing China's economic breach in many areas and the most effective way to do so is by working with allies and other partners," Psaki said.
The approach is in stark contrast to the administration of former President Donald Trump who previously had frequent conflicts with President Xi Jinping, beginning with trade issues and later on the way Beijing handled the Covid-19 epidemic.
Trump personally blamed the Chinese government for the health crisis and often linked the virus to China.
