The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) reports that one of its data systems has been attacked by unknown hackers and has the potential to access sensitive and commercially sensitive information.
In a statement issued by the central bank over the weekend, third-party file sharing services used by the RBNZ to share and store sensitive information were illegally accessed.
Governor Adrian Orr later said that the issue of the attack had been successfully controlled and the system was temporarily shut down.
In response to the matter, the central bank is said to be working with domestic and international cyber security experts as well as other relevant authorities.
Meanwhile, in a recent statement issued today, the central bank said that the cyber attacks that took place were not only targeted at the RBNZ, but also involved other service users.
Governor Orr also said that New Zealand's core functions and financial system remained strong and it was open to continue operations.
The central bank is said to provide more information on this matter when appropriate.
