Democrat Nancy Pelosi was re-elected Speaker of the United States House of Representatives for four consecutive terms.
Pelosi was appointed after receiving 216 votes out of 208. Five Democrats did not vote for the veteran politician.
Pelosi, 80, has been a speaker since 2019 and before that from 2007 to 2011.
According to Pelosi, the new US administration is taking responsibility in difficult times as the previous leadership faced.
"We started a new Congress during a difficult period," Pelosi said of the increase in the number of deaths due to Covid-19 in the US.
Pelosi added that the next Covid-19 stimulus assistance would follow after a US $ 892 billion stimulus package was approved by Congress last month.
Pelosi became involved in the political world in 1976 and helped California Governor Jerry Brown win the Democratic election.
He later became chairman of the Democratic party and won a seat in Congress in 1988.
In the House of Representatives, Pelosi often fights for the issue of Aids research spending.
Apart from that, he is also a loud and high profile opposition. When the US invaded Iraq in 2003, Pelosi strongly opposed the action.
Pelosi's stance caused the Democrats to seize the majority of seats in the House of Representatives for the first time in 12 years in 2006.
After that, she was appointed by the Democrats to be the Speaker of the House of Representatives, thus becoming the first woman to hold the post in US history.
