Prospective President Joe Biden denounced the ‘riots’ triggered by pro-Donald Trump groups raiding the Capitol and demanding an end to the ‘siege’ around the building.
Speaking from Wilmington, Delaware, Biden said the country's democracy was 'facing unprecedented attacks'.
He also called on Trump to fulfill his oath as President and demanded that the siege be stopped.
The act of raiding the Capitol, breaking windows, entering the offices of the U.S. Senate, searching the tables of members of the House of Representatives, threatened the safety of officials.
"This is not a protest, this is a rebellion," said Biden.
In a video uploaded on Twitter, Trump reiterated allegations that votes against him had been ‘stolen’ but urged protesters to return home.
The session with Congress to confirm the election of the Electoral College was postponed and had to be stopped.
Protesters reportedly clashed with police as they tried to enter the Capitol building while chanting slogans and waving pro-Trump flags as well as the United States (US), demanding that the election results be overturned.
The riots caused members of Congress to flee and had to take refuge under chairs while wearing face masks after tear gas was released by authorities.
According to local media reports, a woman was shot dead during the riots. The suspect in the incident has yet to be identified.
After several hours of intrusion, authorities announced that the building had been re-controlled.
However, there were a handful of protesters still around the Capitol despite the curfew being declared throughout the city.
There have also been reports of protests in the states of Kansas and Georgia.
