Akon, the R&B singer who was once famous for his songs Lonely and Don’t Matter may no longer be mentioned in the music industry but in silence this individual is working hard to build a smart city in Senegal.
It is said that the cost of building a smart city, ‘Akon City’ which is also open to the African Diaspora reached $ 6 billion and started construction earlier this year.
The first phase of construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2023 which will include shopping malls, housing, hotels, police stations, schools, waste disposal facilities, solar power plants and hospitals.
The second phase is expected to be completed in 2029 by fully using the crypto currency, Akoin (AKN). Akoin is a crypto currency specially designed for business people.
Most recently, it was reported that the trial phase of the currency was successfully conducted at the Mwale Medical and Technology City (MMTC) complex in Kenya which was first built in 2014. The trial began in November 2020 when AKN was listed on the crypto exchange, Bittrex.
This means that in July, AKN is expected to be fully utilized in the $ 2 billion complex. The use of AKN is also expected to cover about 20,000 MMTC employees by December 2021.
The Akoin developer team also launched a physical card linking to the AKN wallet, which allows users to make transactions covering 40 million retail platforms worldwide.
The success of the currency trial at MMTC will be a reference for the implementation of AKN for the entire city of Akon City in Senegal once completed.
