Amazon founder Jeff Bezos made a surprise decision when he resigned as CEO (CEO) effective in the second half of this year.
He will continue to hold the position of executive chairman of the giant e-commerce company.
According to Bezos, the move gives him space and time to focus on his other agenda.
His place will be replaced by Andy Jassy, who currently heads Amazon's cloud computing business.
"Being the CEO of Amazon is a heavy and tiring responsibility. When you have such responsibilities, it is difficult to pay attention to other things.
"As executive chairman, I will continue to be involved in Amazon's important initiatives but also have the time and energy I need to focus on Day 1 Fund, Bezos Earth Fund, Blue Origin, The Washington Post and various other matters," Bezos said in a letter to Amazon employees yesterday.
Jassy, who has been with Amazon since 1997, has helped develop Amazon Web Services. The app has so far been seen as a profit engine to Amazon.
"Jassy is a well-known person in the company and has been on Amazon for a long time like me. He will be an extraordinary leader and he has full trust from me, ”said Bezos.
Bezos founded Amazon which was then operating as an online bookstore in 1994 in his home garage.
The giant firm now has 1.3 million employees worldwide and saw high growth last year due to the increasing trend of online purchases following the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Amazon reported sales revenue of US $ 386 billion in 2020, an increase of 38% over 2019.
In addition, Amazon's revenue doubled to US $ 21.3 billion.
