The United States will maintain tariffs on Chinese goods by the former Trump administration for the time being, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told CNBC on Thursday.
However, Yellen added, the government will make an assessment of what feels appropriate and how to proceed after a thorough study is done.
When asked if the tariff previously imposed worked or not, Yellen seemed hesitant, before saying that they would see it, CNBC reported.
The White House last month said it would review all national security measures implemented by former President Donald Trump, including a phase 1 trade agreement with Beijing.
The deal has eased tensions between the two largest economies in the world after a trade war that affected the economy and many.
China has promised to buy additional $ 200 billion worth of goods and services over two years under a phase 1 agreement signed by Trump in January 2020, but due to the pandemic crisis, Beijing has so far looked far from achieving its targets for last year.
Meanwhile, Janet Yelen also spoke about the $ 1.9 trillion stimulus move by the Joe Biden administration, saying if launched, it could help America return to its one-year full-time job target.
