The United States (US) has imposed sanctions on two military personnel linked to the coup in Myanmar.

"Today, the US Treasury Department's Foreign Asset Control Office (OFAC) has imposed sanctions on two individuals who are said to be linked and responsible for the coup in Myanmar, namely Lieutenant General Moe Myint Tun and General Maung Maung Kyaw.

"The Treasury Department took this action in response to the actions of the Myanmar security forces which resulted in the death of protesters who held peaceful protests," a statement issued by the department said yesterday.

Bernama reported that after the coup, the Myanmar army announced that both of them had been appointed as members of the National Administrative Council.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Antony Blinken vowed that the US would take more action if the ruling power was not restored.

"The US will continue to work with a coalition of international partners to ensure that coup leaders and those responsible for the violence are held accountable.

"We will not hesitate to take action against those who commit atrocities and set aside the will of the people," Blinken said in a statement.

On February 1, the Myanmar army carried out a coup, announced a one-year emergency order and accused Aung San Suu Kyi-led Democratic League Party of cheating in the November 8 general election.
