United States (US) President Joe Biden was urged about efforts to tackle the influx of foreign immigrants in the southern part of the country’s border during his first official press conference.

More than 17,000 children are being held in government detention centers and Biden is being challenged on whether his policies are likely to contribute to the increase in their arrivals.

Biden however defended his record and promised to be transparent.

He blamed former President Donald Trump for causing a deepening humanitarian crisis south of the border and it is normal for the U.S. to experience an influx of foreign immigrants during the winter.

"Honestly, on this matter, nothing has changed. The reason they come at a time like this is to protect themselves from the hot weather in the desert, ”said Biden.

Biden also blamed the situation in the migrants' country of origin, including natural disasters, lack of employment opportunities and crime.

When asked when he would open a detention center for journalists, Biden said he would be transparent.

"You will have access to everything," he explained but did not give any further details.

The one -hour official press conference also discussed various issues including the issue of weapons to foreign policy.

Biden had previously sparked speculation about his plans to run in the 2024 presidential election but the question remains unanswered to this day.
