The U.S. Senate debate on the $ 1.9 trillion stimulus bill, which was supposed to begin on Wednesday, was postponed until Thursday.

Earlier, President Joe Biden had agreed to limit the number of people receiving direct payments of $ 1,400 in compromise with moderate Democratic senators.

Previously, moderate Democratic senators had rejected the idea of giving $ 1,400 to individuals earning more than $ 100,000 a year.

Democratic leaders need to abide by this rejection as the party's power at the Senate level is limited to 50 votes. Therefore, they cannot lose one vote if they want to pass the bill.

As is well known, power in the Senate is divided into 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans. Democrats have an advantage in the Senate because US Vice President Kamala Harris (Democrat) has the power to decide the final vote.

Following that, individuals earning up to $ 75,000 and couples earning up to $ 150,000 a year, are eligible for direct payment assistance of $ 1,400.

Meanwhile, payments will be phased out for individuals earning $ 80,000 and couples earning $ 160,000 and above.

The Senate will reconvene at noon on Thursday (US time), according to Senator Dick Durbin. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives had to cancel its session after Capitol Police warned of a possible attack on the building by pro-Trump groups.
