An Egyptian court ordered the Ever Given container ship seized until its owner paid $ 900 million to the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) in damages for blocking the important route for nearly a week.

According to Bernama, the application to seize the ship was submitted to the SCA in the Ismailia economic court.

The SCA demanded that the vessel be detained until all rescue and maintenance expenses as well as traffic loss costs over the six days are paid in full.

The Panamanian-registered vessel is now placed under court surveillance, in accordance with Article 6 of Egyptian maritime trade law until the operator Ever Given meets SCA’s demands.

Court officials reportedly went to the location of the ship anchored in Bitter Lake yesterday to inform the ship's crew.

Meanwhile, SCA chief Osama Rabie told Youm7 newspaper that the Ever Given incident stranded in the Suez Canal is still under investigation and the results will be announced tomorrow.

The SCA estimates the total global trade loss as a result of the incident at US $ 1 billion.
