The United States is ready to take action against Russian individuals and entities in retaliation for allegations of misconduct including the issue of SolarWinds hacking and attempts to disrupt U.S. elections.
The Biden administration is expected to announce sanctions on several government officials and spies, as well as about 20 entities as soon as Thursday.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the US is also expected to expel about 10 Russian officials from the country.
The measures will be taken after President Joe Biden warned Russian President Vladimir Putin in a call Tuesday that America would defend its interests.
The action will be launched in the form of an executive order from Biden as well as sanctions coordinated with the State Department and the Treasury Department.
However, the White House, the State Department and the U.S. Treasury Department did not immediately respond to this latest rumor.
In addition, the U.S. is also expected to announce aggressive new measures by extending existing bans on U.S. banks trading in Russian government debt.
The previous ban, which targeted part of government debt, has shaken the market and put pressure on the Russian economy.
