The President of the United States (US), Joe Biden, ordered the country's intelligence agency to conduct an investigation into the origin of the Covid-19 outbreak.
In a statement issued, Biden urged U.S. intelligence groups to redouble their efforts and report to him within 90 days.
Adding to the statement, Biden had asked for reports on the origins of Covid-19 as soon as he was appointed President, including ‘whether the virus was transmitted from human contact with infected animals or a laboratory accident’.
After receiving the report this month, he called for ‘further action to be taken’.
"To date, the U.S. Intelligence Community has provided two possible scenarios but has not yet reached a definitive conclusion on this question," Biden said.
Biden added that the US will continue to work with countries around the world to put pressure on China to provide cooperation in international research based on complete, transparent evidence and provide access to all relevant data and evidence.
Covid-19 was first detected in the city of Wuhan, China in late 2019.
Over 168 million cases have been reported worldwide since then and at least 3.5 million deaths have been recorded.
U.S. authorities have previously linked the initial case of Covid-19 to a seafood market in Wuhan and scientists believe the outbreak was spread to humans through animals.
But recent US media reports show evidence that the virus may have been 'triggered' from a laboratory in China.
Beijing, however, denounced the report and claimed the virus was spread from US laboratories.
