World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the world is now in the early stages of a new wave of Covid-19.

"After a year and a half of pandemics, and seven months since the first vaccine was approved, the world is now in the early stages of another wave of deadly infections," Tedros said.

Speaking to members of the International Olympic Committee in Tokyo, Tedros said the world’s failure to share vaccines, tests and treatments had led to a ‘two-track pandemic’.

Countries with adequate treatment and vaccine equipment are being opened up, while other resource-scarce countries are forced to close to slow the spread of the virus.

Tedros also said the longer the epidemic lasts, the more socio -economic unrest will arise. "Pandemics are a test, and the world is failing," he added.

In addition, he also said that the threat of this epidemic will remain until all countries around the world can deal with this pandemic crisis.

Meanwhile, Tedros denounced the vaccine differences between rich and low -income countries. 75% of vaccine doses, or over 3.5 billion injections, have been distributed to 10 major countries, while only 1% of the population in poor countries has received at least one injection.

As a result, he called on the world's major economies to share vaccines and fund global efforts to make them more accessible as well as provide incentives for companies to increase vaccine production.
