Toyota stopped all ‘donations’ to members of the United States (US) Congress who voted to protest Joe Biden’s victory during last year’s presidential election.

The Japan -based company faced criticism following its contributions after a riot at the Capitol building on January 6.

Toyota reportedly donated more than $ 50,000 to Republicans trying to block Biden's victory in some states and the matter was revealed last month.

The company, however, had previously defended its actions.

“Toyota is committed to supporting and promoting actions that grow our democracy.

"We are actively listening to our shareholders and at this point, we have decided to stop contributions to members of Congress who protested victory in some states during last year's US presidential election," he said in a statement.

However, the company did not say how long it would suspend the donations.

The decision was made after Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) last month reported Toyota had contributed $ 56,000 directly to 38 Republicans.

CREW added that the amount was the largest donated by a company to politicians protesting Biden's victory.

According to a CREW spokesperson, it welcomes the move made by Toyota.

"There is no need to campaign for the public to tell them to do the right thing but we are happy that the effort was successful," said the spokesman.

Last February, Microsoft said its political action committee would defer all contributions until the end of next year to the 147 MPs who voted against Biden.

Google and General Electric did the same.
