The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that Europe now faces the risk of a new wave of coronaviruses.
Covid-19 infection in Europe was reported to have increased by 10% in a week following increased association, travel, gatherings and the relaxation of social restrictions, after two months of record declines.
WHO regional director for Europe Hans Kluge on Thursday urged citizens to remain disciplined in complying with control rules to avoid a new wave of epidemics.
Kluge also warned that the Delta variant will be dominant in European countries by August.
The Delta variant, which originated in India, is seen as the biggest threat worldwide. The European Union disease control agency (ECDC) estimates that it could account for 90% of cases by the end of next month.
To curb the spread, Europe is now working to increase vaccination after lagging far behind other major countries. As of July 1, about 38.9% of the population had received both doses of the vaccine, according to data released from the ECDC.
