U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping reportedly spoke via a phone call for the first time since February on Friday.

According to a statement issued by the White House, they have held extensive and strategic discussions on how to manage competitive relations between the two countries to avoid conflict.

Tensions in U.S.-China relations have increased since the Donald Trump administration, squeezed by disagreements over trade issues, espionage and the coronavirus pandemic.

The Biden administration has signaled that it plans to continue crackdown on China, like previous governments, but will do so in cooperation with allies.

Meanwhile, according to Chinese state media, Xinhua said Xi told Biden that Washington's actions against Beijing had caused serious difficulties to relations between the two countries.

If China and the US work together, both countries and the world will benefit, on the other hand, if they are hostile to each other, both countries and the world will suffer, Xi said according to a Xinhua report.

The 90-minute conversation also saw discussions on economic issues, climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic.
