North Korea has launched a new long -range missile test over the weekend, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Monday.
After two years of conducting research, Pyongyang has successfully conducted a two -day test that saw the missile move to reach a target of 1,500 km (930 miles).
However, the launch did not violate a UN Security Council resolution, in which they had previously dropped sanctions against North Korea that banned ballistic missile testing.
Following the launch of the missile, which is described as a 'strategic weapon of major importance', it shows that the country is still capable of developing weapons despite the economic crisis and food shortages.
The KCNA reported that the development of the missile system was of strategic importance as it provided North Korea with other effective deterrence methods to ensure national security as well as be able to curb the enemy's military efforts.
Japan's chief cabinet secretary Katsunobu Kato said his government was concerned about the test and they would continue to work with the United States and South Korea to monitor the situation.
Meanwhile, the U.S. military says the missile test has posed a threat to neighboring countries and the international community, adding that support for its allies South Korea and Japan remains intact.
