‘Squid Game’ Triggers Phenomenon, Also Shakes The Stock Market

 Growing in popularity, South Korea's latest TV series Squid Game has sparked a phenomenon and attracted viewers around the world.


Under the direction of director Hwang Dong Hyuk, the show began airing on September 17 and became the first South Korean series to top the charts on the global broadcasting platform, Netflix.


Starring Lee Jung Jae, Park Hae Soo and Wi Ha Jun, Squid Game brings the concept of a mystery reality game invitation to 456 selected participants to win cash prizes worth 45.6 billion Won estimated at around RM161 million.


However, participants who lose and lose will end their lives!



The global popularity gained by Squid Game has propelled at least two South Korean media stocks to their latest highs. One of them is Bucket Studio Co., which owns a 15% stake in Artist Company, the agency for its lead actor Lee Jung Jae.


Media The Korea Herald reported Bucket Studio Co has doubled its market capitalization to 200 billion Won.


In addition, film production company Showbox also saw its shares jump up to 50% in September as reported by Bloomberg.


Shares of the South Korean production media company are expected to show a more attractive performance next year in anticipation of rising demand.


Squid Game is seen as the best example of a high quality TV series show and able to compete with Hollywood productions.
