The UK Has a Voice! Danger If the Northern Ireland Issue Continues to Protract

The UK’s Brexit minister warned of relations between Britain and the European Union (EU) should the issue of Northern Ireland’s trade rules not be resolved.

David Frost told in his speech at the British-Irish Association in Oxford that the Northern Ireland protocol needed major and significant changes and if these disagreements dragged on it could lead to mistrust between the UK and the EU which could affect relations as a whole.

The proposed changes include the movement of goods to Northern Ireland, regulations for goods and governance.

The post-Brexit trade agreement between the UK and the EU has seen customs and border checks imposed on some goods moving between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.

In addition to wanting to respect the rules governing goods from the EU’s single market, the rules seek to keep the border open between Northern Ireland and EU member states, Ireland which is a key pillar of the peace process in the region.

However, the rule has angered the Northern Irish union community who say that checks at the border will weaken their relations with other countries in the UK.

For months Frost sought to change the protocol, but the EU repeatedly refused to reopen talks after years of protracted negotiations.
