Hyundai-Sime Darby Motor Launches First Electric Car

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors Sdn Bhd (HSDM) has launched its first electric car (EV) named ‘Hyundai Kona Eletric’.


In a statement issued by the company dated November 23, they stated that there are 3 EV variations released and can be chosen from among them:


Kona Eletric (e-Lite) equipped with a 39.2-kWH battery with 7.2 kW onboard charge (OBC)

Kona Eletric Plus (e-Plus) equipped with a 39.2-kWH battery with 11 kW OBC

Kona Eletric Max (e-Max) equipped with a 64-kWH battery with 11kW OBC


Sime Darby Malaysia's managing director of retail and distribution, Jeffrey Gan said the launch of Kona Electric was Sime Darby Motor's response to the increasing demand for EVs.


He added that it reflects their strategy to be a key enabler of the transition to EVs as an important element in the automotive industry's decarbonization efforts besides supporting the government's push to move towards low carbon mobility as announced in Budget 2022.


Meanwhile, HSDM managing director Low Yuan Lung said the launch of Kona Electric would meet the needs of customers who are targeting an environmentally conscious lifestyle while ensuring comfort, safety and convenience in their daily commute.


Meanwhile, the price of a Kona Electric starts from RM149.88 which is fully exempted from import and excise duty, sales tax and road tax as announced in the 2022 Budget.


Kona Eletric will be in the market in the first quarter of 2022.
