Omicron Concerns Add Pressure On Bursa Malaysia

 At 9.27am the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was down 3.30 points at 1,489.71 from Friday's close of 1,502.01.


It opened lower due to profit -taking activity on selected heavyweights.


The index opened 4.44 points at 1,497.57.


On the broader market, investors saw losers outnumber gainers by 309 to 145, while 265 counters were unchanged, 1,585 untraded and 21 suspended.


Total turnover at 370.41 million units worth RM229.76 million.


A note issued by Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd said investors were paying close attention to Malaysia's inflation rate which will be released this week.



He added that investors are cautious in choosing the utility sector due to the spread of Omicron variants which continues to worry.


Meanwhile, Wall Street fell last Friday as concerns over the rise of the Omicron case and more hawkish monetary policy in the future have led to some pullbacks in local equities.


Heavyweights saw Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) add 1 sen to RM8.09 and IHH Healthcare Bhd rose 3 sen to RM6.57 while Public Bank Bhd declined 2 sen to RM4.06, Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd (PetChem) declined 7 sen at RM8.73 and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) fell 13 sen to RM9.38.


Active stocks saw ATA IMS Bhd remain at 68 sen, Borneo Oil Bhd rose 0.5 sen at 3 sen, Top Glove Corp Bhd added 13 sen at RM2.29 and Careplus Group Bhd reached 8 sen at RM1.09.


On the index board, the FBM Emas index was down 23.45 points at 10,896.87, the FBMT 100 index fell 23.01 points at 10,599.70 and the FBM Emas Shariah index was down 13.69 points at 11,730.94.


FBM 70 lost 28.63 points at 13,971.22 and FBM ACE lost 20.02 points at 6,257.80.


The Products and Services Industry Index declined 0.92 points at 195.88, the Financial Services index lost 37.90 points at 15,245.18 and the Plantation index declined 46.75 points at 6,383.22.
