UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce a new bill that would remove regulation by the European Union (EU) earlier this week.
According to Downing Street, the ‘Brexit Freedoms’ or Brexit Freedoms bill will allow Parliament to amend or repeal thousands of EU rules that are still in force.
These reforms will reduce bureaucracy by £ 1 billion for UK businesses, ease the regulatory burden and contribute to the government’s mission to consolidate and upgrade the country.
Even so, the Ministers of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland disagreed with the amendment and believed the plan would undermine the country’s constitutional agreement.
Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for the Constitution Angus Robertson described the move as an insult to the UK government’s recent commitment to re-establishing relations with the EU.
After Brexit, many EU laws were continued as a condition for the UK to exit the single market. However since September, the government has revised the rules which can be kept, abolished or amended.
Under the Brexit withdrawal legislation passed in 2018, the retained EU law has its own legal status and requires a special process to change it.
