Nearly four months after Meta switched from Facebook, the company has been sued by an Australian millionaire.
What happen?
It is understood Fortescue Metals chairman Andrew Forrest has filed a lawsuit against Meta on charges of violating anti-money laundering laws, and its platform was used to deceive Australians through plastered crypto ads.
Not only that, Forrest also accused Meta of taking a lazy stance in blocking fraudulent activity on its platform.
The proof is that an Australian victim lost AUD $ 952,000 (RM2.84 million) because of one of the advertisements.
As a result, Forrest took early action so that there were no more victims of the Meta scam.
Even worse for Meta when one of its ads featured a picture of Forrest in the promotion of a cryptocurrency scheme.
While Forrest himself has filed an application for advertising restrictions involving the cryptocurrency and its image against Meta, along with an open letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in November 2019.
A Long Procedure
Forrest’s lawsuit was Meta’s first suit after a name change in October 2021 and it was filed in Western Australian Magistrates Court.
Under Australian law, private prosecution of international companies under the Commonwealth Criminal Code requires the consent of the attorney general.
Forrest's lawyer Steven Lewis explained that the suit had already been approved by the attorney general, Michaelia Cash and if Meta was found guilty, the maximum penalty to be imposed would be AUD $ 126,000 (RM375.4 thousand).
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 28, 2022.
