A report by the United Nations (UN) states North Korean cybercriminals have stolen cryptocurrencies worth millions of dollars to fund its missile program.
It is said that between 2020 and mid -2021, cybercriminals have stolen more than $ 50 million of such digital assets and such attacks are a ‘significant source of revenue’ to contribute to Pyongyang’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
The findings were reported to the UN sanctions committee on Friday and it also said the cybercrime targeted at least 3 cryptocurrency exchanges in North America, Europe and Asia.
The report also refers to a study published last month by security firm Chainalysis that suggested a North Korean cyber attack had left $ 400 million worth of digital assets missing last year.
Moreover, in 2019, the UN reported that North Korea had raised as much as $ 2 billion for its weapons of mass destruction program.
General knowledge, North Korea has been banned by the UN Security Council from conducting nuclear tests and launching ballistic missiles.
However, UN reports say North Korea remains adamant and develops its nuclear and ballistic missile infrastructure, as well as continuing to search for materials, technology and knowledge abroad, including cyber methods and scientific research.
Meanwhile, embargo monitors said there was a ‘significant acceleration’ of missile tests by Pyongyang.
