The United Kingdom (UK) authorities, Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have successfully busted three criminals involved in the fraud of 3 non-fungible tokens (NFT), along with the seizure of a total of crypto assets worth £ 5,000 (RM28.3 thousand ).
This makes the arrests involve fraud cases worth around £ 1.4 million (around RM7.9 million).
The arrests that took place yesterday, also involved confiscations.
It is understood that the fraud committed by the 3 offenders involved the use of 250 fake company websites; theft and forgery of identity, along with addresses; use of unregistered mobile phones and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs); invoice falsity; and impersonation in legitimate business activities.
For the record, this is the first legal action taken on a crime involving an offense in the NFT space in the UK.
At the same time, it serves as a stern warning to any investor who uses crypto assets to take refuge from HMRC’s supervision.
The arrests come a week after the U.S. Department of Justice (US) seized $ 3.6 billion of assets in Bitcoin (BTC) apparently linked to the hacking of Hong Kong’s crypto exchange, Bitfinex in 2017.
