The United States and China will hold their first high-level face-to-face talks on the Ukraine-Russia war on Monday, according to a Bloomberg report.

The meeting, which will involve National Security adviser Jake Sullivan and China's top diplomat, Communist Party Political Bureau member Yang Jiechi was reportedly held in Rome.

Topics of discussion are expected to include the impact on regional and global security of the Russian attack on Ukraine.

President Joe Biden’s top adviser has sought to increase pressure on China to impose economic sanctions on Russia as the U.S. and its allies have done.

On the same day, Sullivan will also reportedly meet with Italian diplomatic adviser Luigi Mattiolo to discuss coordinating the international response to the war.

The last time Sullivan and Yang met was in Switzerland in October, where they discussed topics of common interest including concerns over human rights violations in Xinjiang and Hong Kong as well as disputes over Taiwan and the South China Sea.
