"The world's social media giants have spoken out, now it's the turn of the streaming giants."

The actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin in attacking the Ukrainian government have met with great opposition around the world.

Sanctions after sanctions were imposed on Russia from SWIFT to several other social media giants.

Here are some of the new restrictions imposed on Russia by the world’s leading video streaming companies and short video sharing apps.

TikTok

Russian communications regulator Roskomnadzor has asked ByteDance -owned TikTok to stop disseminating its military -related content from being recommended to underage users.

He found that there were several videos involving Russian ‘special military operations’ as well as videos of anti-Russian supporters displayed on the app.

A TikTok spokesman has confirmed that it has blocked access to Russian state media channels, RT and Sputnik across Europe, following sanctions measures by the European Union (EU).

TikTok, which is popular among teen users and also has a special version of the app for children under 13, was not told specifically about the age limit for recommending such content by Russian regulators.

TikTok has not yet responded to Roskomnadzor's request.

Netflix

Netflix has no plans to add government -linked channels into its streaming service in Russia despite regulations requiring it to distribute government -backed channels.

Netflix has issued a statement that they will not do so due to the current situation involving Russia invading Ukraine.

Russia, which launched its services in Russia in October 2020, is supposed to comply with Vladimir Putin's new state rules starting March 1.

According to Roskomnadzor, the streaming company will have to distribute 20 news, sports and entertainment channels supported by the Russian government.

So far, Netflix has over 100,000 subscribers in Russia.
