The European Union (EU) is reportedly working on a new package of sanctions against Russia that is likely to see more bans imposed following its latest action in northern Ukraine.

According to two sources familiar with the matter, the EU is likely to restrict the leasing of aircraft and import -export goods such as jet fuel, steel products and luxury goods.

However, the bloc is still divided on whether to extend the restrictions on energy imports given its high dependence on Russia.

Over the weekend, the world was rocked by reports of mass killings of civilians in Bucha, a city that has been retaken following the recent withdrawal of Russian troops around Kiev.

As a result, it has sparked various calls among EU member states for the bloc to act harder in punishing Russia for its aggression on Ukraine.

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that the EU would have to agree to block oil and coal from Moscow following reported atrocities in Bucha.

However, there is a group of EU countries that are vehemently opposed to passing any energy restrictions.
