Sony Group Corp. and Kirkbi, an investment company owned by Lego Group, have invested US $ 2 billion in ‘Fortnite’ video game maker, Epic Games.

According to an official Epic Games statement, Sony has injected an investment of $ 1 billion and Kirkbi has done the same, bringing the company’s cumulative value to $ 31.5 billion in an effort to realize the metaverse.

Last week, Epic Games and Lego signed a partnership to develop a ‘family-friendly’ metaverse for kids.

Kirkbi Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Soren Thorup Sorensen, described the collaboration as very important to have an impact on the future of children and the investment will accelerate the company's involvement into the world of digital games.

The new investment between Sony and Lego with Epic Games further fuels the race of giant companies to realize metaverse dreams.

Earlier, Microsoft Inc in January had bought video game company ‘Call of Duty’, Activition Blizzard for $ 68.7 billion which was the largest acquisition in the gaming sector as well as stimulating the growth of the metaverse industry.

In addition, Roblox Corp., which produces the Roblox video game, is also building its own metaverse that allows millions of people to congregate or work in the Robux-backed virtual economy, the currency in the gaming app.

In the meantime, Meta Platform Inc. is also testing tools for the sale of their digital assets through its virtual platform, Horizon Worlds in preparation into the metaverse.

Meta states the tool allows users to create virtual classrooms, games and fashion accessories accessed through virtual reality (VR) headsets, then sell the accessories or offer paid access to custom -built digital spaces.
