In the latest record, one kilogram of tea leaves was successfully sold at a price tag of 1.96 million yen, equivalent to RM 66,373.16.
It is understood that the tea was auctioned in the Tea Market auction in Japan last week.
Why is it so expensive?
For information, the leaf is not an ordinary tea leaf but it is a Samidori leaf that sprouts in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka.
This year saw a very slow production of tea leaves. Even so, the quality of the tea leaves remains the same, unchanged.
No wonder there are a handful of retailers who are willing to buy this tea leaf because its quality in terms of color and shape is still maintained.
Forbes has reported that a cup of tea containing two tablespoons of Samidori leaves can be worth up to $ 31 (RM135). While the average cup of green tea is only worth less than 8 cents for 2020.
Japan once recorded the most expensive tea sales worth RM36.7 thousand before the latest record competed.
The tea market has seen rapid growth over the past few decades.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the market value of tea could reach $ 21.33 billion by 2024, driven by the largest markets: China, India, Kenya, Sri Lanka, and Turkey.
