As the invasion of Ukraine entered its 83rd day, Western countries continued to punish Russia for its actions by imposing strict sanctions on the financial and economic sectors.

However, the impact is not only felt by Moscow but also the rest of the world especially those who depend on exports from Russia and Ukraine thus triggering concerns over the global food crisis.

On Monday, Russia’s Foreign Ministry warned that Western efforts to block Moscow could exacerbate the problem of global food shortages.

According to a statement released on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry, it says that the unilateral actions of Western countries, especially from the G7 group of countries have exacerbated the problems of logistics and financial chains or food supply to world markets.

Before the war, Ukraine and Russia accounted for about 29% of wheat production for the world market.

However, production from Ukraine stagnated after Moscow launched the invasion on February 24, causing analysts to project a decline of at least 35% this year compared to 2021 in wheat production in the country.

Meanwhile, Kyiv also suspended exports of staple cereals to maintain its own food supply.

The statement from Moscow came a day after G7 leaders warned that Russia's escalating conflict had triggered a threat to the economy to weaken.
