China continues to boost the use of the digital yuan nationwide.
Most recently, the digital yuan is rumored to have been accepted for public transportation such as trams in Guangzhou and can also be used to top up city public transportation cards in Xiamen.
Based on reports from Guangzhou media, all Route 1 tram fare transactions can be done through the QR code scan method in the digital yuan application.
While public transport cards in Xiamen can be topped up using digital yuan starting May 6.
It is expected that the use of digital yuan in Xiamen city will be expanded for payment of public transport fares using QR codes in the future.
Digital yuan testing has actually already been rolled out across China, involving 23 cities since October 2020 in phases.
It was then extended to the entire sector in stages and the public transport industry for 12 cities in China has already conducted digital yuan testing so far.
For the record, the digital yuan (or known as e-CNY) has reached transactions totaling 87.565 billion yuan by the end of 2021.
